We all have the power to improve our lives. There is nothing stopping us from doing so except for resistance and fear. Many people settle for less due to those two things. We don’t need to settle for less, but so many people do simply because they don’t believe they deserve any more. They’ll settle for a bad relationship or a terrible job just because they feel they’re not good enough to do any better. They’re not living in a state of joy, but a state of resentment and tolerance. There are many, many people that just tolerate their lives because they are not doing anything they truly care about. They work long hours at an unfulfilling job and come home exhausted and burnt out from bending to the will of their corporate masters. They had dreams once. What ever happened to them?
When you were a child, did you ever answer the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Nobody ever said they wanted to be a ditch-digger or a secretary. We all had our dreams back then of how our lives would turn out, and it changed from time to time, but the overall dream was to live a life that was meaningful and joyful. Look around you today and what do you see? Depression, anxiety, apathy, and a whole host of other negative emotions. People working jobs that they hate just to pay the bills they can’t afford. Passions going by the wayside for more “practical” occupations. “Do what you love and the money will come” has turned into, “There isn’t a market for what you love to do, so you’d better get a job doing something else.” So most of us end up tolerating our lives instead of loving them. It truly is a shame because it doesn’t have to be that way. All you need is a little courage and a passion to change the focus of your life to something better.
Even if you hate your job, you don’t have to be a slave to it. You don’t have to do it when you’re not working. So why not pursue one of your passions when you are off the clock (and even on the clock if you can swing it)? You can transition to something more meaningful right now just by embracing your passion and moving towards it gradually until you become proficient enough that you can make a career out of it. We are all capable of learning, aren’t we? So anything you wish to be would only take education or skill-building and that’s it. “I don’t know how” is a feeble excuse. “I don’t have time” is another. If you have time to watch your favorite TV shows, you have time to pursue your passion. And it will make your life that much better.
As an example, my passion is writing and comedy. I find writing to be very relaxing and joyful. Sometimes I write just to rant out my feelings and other times I write for the simple purpose of inspiring people. My writing of the past couple of years has been sort of negative, talking about the state of the world and what we need to do to fix it. What we truly need is a consciousness shift in humanity to change the world in a positive way that allows for balance and sustainability. We need to break down the walls this civilization has put up and become who we truly are, children of the Earth. We need to get our joy and pleasure back. We need to lead lives that are better and more meaningful in every capacity.
The current existence is called “empty” by many people due to their dissatisfaction with the way things are. Well, if you are so dissatisfied, it is up to you to change these things. If something bothers you, it is up to you to fix it. We are all responsible for creating a world we can feel good about. We need to heal the Earth before it is beyond healing. We must change the way we think about every facet of our lifestyles. We need to be mindful of everything we consume (food or merchandise). We need to ask questions about the way things are and how we can make them better. Better in a sense of towards greater joy, fulfillment, and balance.
The human race has not been a good steward of the Earth thus far, but it is never too late to start repairing. We need to drop the scarcity mindset and allow the abundance mindset to come back to us. Human beings lived a pretty abundant life until very recently. There was always more than enough to go around. There was no need for money or hierarchy because everything we needed we could get ourselves and we could spend most of our time having fun, pursuing what we enjoy most, and being amazed at how wonderful life is because we are totally free. I long for such a world once again, but the question is whether or not we as a civilization have the courage and consciousness to do so. I believe in time we will. A better life awaits us.
